The EPA has confirmed that the R2 is as efficient as a Tesla despite its worse aerodynamics. It’s a huge engineering feat for Rivian. With all-terrain tyres, the R2’s range drops to 307 miles.

Trunk:
The Tesla Model Y offers a total of 75.5 cu ft with the seats folded down, 29 cu ft in the rear and 4.1 cu ft in the trunk. The Y model also offers an optional third row of seats, unlike the R2.
The Rivian R2 has less overall space due to its shorter body. Still, it offers ingenious solutions: fully flat-folding seats, two gloveboxes, hidden compartments, and the famous R1S-style front trunk, which is larger than Tesla’s.

Both cars have a NACS port and access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Rivian promises 200kW+ fast charging, 10-80% in approximately 30 minutes. The Tesla Juniper still packs up to 250 kW, but highway efficiency is still better than the Rivian’s.

Buy the Tesla Model Y Juniper 2026 if:
You want proven efficiency, the best charging network, better infotainment, a lower price of entry, and a car primarily for city and highway. Juniper fixed the biggest flaws of the old Model Y – noise, stiff suspension, and interior quality.
Buy Rivian R2 if:
You want adventure. For $10k more than the base Model Y, you get a true little off-road tank, 656 horsepower, higher ground clearance, towing capability, and that “cool” factor that Tesla no longer has. If you live near the mountains, camp, or ride a bike, the R2 is made for you.
